The waves were eight metres high – Footage courtesy Ervino Curtis Two people have been killed and six injured as giant waves slammed into a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, the ship’s owners have said. The 26ft (8m) high rogue waves hit the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty off the coast of north-east Spain. A spokesman for owner Louis Cruises said three “abnormally high” waves broke windows in the front of the ship. The Louis Majesty was heading to Genoa on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise but has now returned to Barcelona. “A wave broke the glass in the area of the saloon and water was taken on board,” said a spokesman for Spain’s coast guard. Cruise continues The victims have been identified as a German and an Italian man. “Louis Cruises extends its sincere condolences to the families of the two victims and its full support to the injured passengers while expressing its deep sorrow for the incident,” a statement from the company said. The ship was carrying 1350 passengers and 580 crew. A French naval official said there had been “no signs of the least problem with the Louis Majesty”. But Cmdr Bernard Celier said there had been winds of more than 100km/h (60mph) in the area. The ship is expected to resume its voyage to its final destination, Genoa, once the victims have been taken off the ship and the injured have received treatment.

    Considering the impact I see in this video, I highly doubt any sort of stronger glass would’ve save the lives of those two people, nor would it all be cost effective to outfit an entire ship with such glass. The windows are very strong as is, and to do such a thing, mandate extreme case preventive measures such as this, would be like mandating 1/2″ roll-cages in all consumer cars. Sure, it’s a achievable, but cost effective and really necessary? No. In fact, it’s highly detrimental to the former

    lol the point im making is that your not making a point saying I’m talking swells, not breaking waves. when its shitty out you get both, get it? it should of been designed better.

    yes I have, and you do not even make a point, you know.

  4. dustyC420 on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    have you ever been out on the ocean when its shitty out? theres usually breaking waves that come along periodically unless its a calm day w/ large swells from a distant storm.

    hey look @ the internet tough guy lol! when I said 1st deck I was talking about the 1st deck above the deck of the hull, I realize these ships have numbered decks below deck, so 5th deck -1st deck above deck w/e.. irregardless the ship should of been designed better to handle 26ft seas w/o shit like this happening! I’ve encountered seas this big and have never been further than 100mi offshore on F/V’s a fraction of the size of this ship. how far out does this ship go?

  12. steliosoctavios on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    @dustyC420 5th deck, not the 1st.
    do the math: 1m3 equals 1025kg (1ton)
    imagine mor than 1ton of water with speed hiting you. Even bullet proof glass can´t withstand this enormous force.
    dont be a morron

  13. dustyC420 on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    no I havn’t but I work on the ocean and that ship should be designed to withstand a 25ft wave no problem. 25ft isn’t as “huge” as their trying to make it out to be.

    @dustyC420

    Are you kidding me? Have you ever been on a cruise ship? Trust me, that glass is very strong. The problem is that freak waves are stronger.

    It looks like a crapper overflowed

  18. tausendstein on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    it is not clear that this is a rogue or freak wave…it depends of the general wave situation…and normaly you are speaking of rogue waves in special if they are abnormal high (>15 metres)

  19. 15kewlguy on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    Hmmm i guess its possbile to flip a ship over kinda like the poseidon but a bigger wave though.

  20. supersonicsaz on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    it was on deck five not deck one

  21. CruiseSource on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    Craziness…

  22. dustyC420 on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm

    this company should get sued for using glass that thin on THE FIRST DECK of the ship! that glass should of been bullet proof! did they really think this ship would never encounter a 25ft wave?!

  23. Grog85 on March 7th, 2010 8:00 pm
